Why Detox?

Making the decision to take the first step toward recovery is a defining moment; it starts with detox and we’re here to help you make your detox plan.

Detox involves the medically-supervised administration of medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms as alcohol or drugs are processed from the body. We offer personalized care tailored to each patient’s unique withdrawal experience. Understanding that every individual has different symptoms, we have a variety of holistic modalities to ensure a comfortable detox experience. Our approach to withdrawal management addresses not only physical symptoms but also mental and emotional ones. Our comprehensive wellness team collaborates closely with our board-certified addiction medicine physician to provide a highly customized detox process, focusing on each individual’s specific needs.

Alcohol withdrawal can cause severe symptoms, including seizures, delirium tremens, and heart complications. It can also lead to complications such as dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and severe anxiety. Medical supervision ensures that these symptoms are managed promptly and effectively. The medications used to alleviate withdrawal symptoms need to be carefully administered and monitored.

Benzodiazepines are primarily prescribed as anti-anxiety and insomnia medication. Some of the most common drugs in this category are: Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Librium and Klonopin.

When someone stops taking benzodiazepines, withdrawal begins almost immediately and can be severe. Possible side effects can include: nausea, cramping, anxiety, agitation, fever, sweating and seizures. Because of its intensity and inherent risk, in order to be done safely, detox should take place in a supervised setting by licensed medical professionals.

Opiates/Opioids are drugs commonly used for pain management and relief. Here are some of the most common drugs in this category: OxyContin, Oxycodone, Vicodin, Heroin, Methadone, Codeine, Hydrocodone, Morphine, Percocet and Percodan.

When someone stops taking opiates, withdrawal and symptom onset begins almost immediately. Opiates/Opioids cause symptoms of extreme illness, which can last for two weeks or more. Possible symptoms include: sweats, shakes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, headache, delirium and others. Because of its intensity and inherent risk, in order to be done safely, detox should take place in a supervised setting by licensed medical professionals.

Stimulants like amphetamines, methamphetamines, cocaine, and ecstasy are known as “uppers” for their euphoric effects. They’re used legally for conditions like ADHD or narcolepsy and illegally for recreational purposes. Methods of use include oral intake, inhalation, injection, or smoking.

Withdrawal from stimulants presents intense physical and mental symptoms, often opposite to their initial euphoric effects, including depression, low energy, anxiety, and insomnia. Severe depression is a critical concern due to its link with suicidal thoughts. Our facility ensures a secure detox with medical supervision, staffed by professionals skilled in providing comfort and safety during the withdrawal process.

With the legalization of Cannabis and the progression of more potent strains, cannabis withdrawal can be severe. Less common is cannabis psychosis, including paranoia, delusions, disorganized thinking, or even hallucinations.

Withdrawal symptoms typically start within 24-48 hours after use. This early phase of withdrawal can include vomiting, stomach pain, insomnia, irritability, decreased appetite, shakiness and, less often, sweating and chills. Withdrawal symptoms can be managed in a detox setting.
